I Am, On debut, is co-produced by Onir and Sanjay Suri. The cast includes a mix of talents and attitudes, each bringing in anticipation and expectation. As catchy are the lyrics by Amitabh Varma and Amitabh Bhattacharya and the music by Rajiv Bhalla, Amit Trivedi and Vivek Philip. The movie is written by Onir, Merle Kroeger and Urmi Juvekar, and is an out and out social drama.
Rahul Bose brings a new passion to the story line that explores the gay world. Indian cinema is steaming up to I Am, the intertwined four short stories. It explores the dimensions of men who solicit male prostitutes, the world of blackmail and how authorities deal with an individual’s sexuality, under the dictates of Indian law. The storyline explores the prohibition in the subcontinent for same-sex relations, and overall gives audiences a challenging and very rewarding celluloid experience.
Effeminate, the protagonist’s character takes understanding of the law and personal sexual choices people are making today to a new level of exposure. The emotions drive home the feelings of being discriminated against, and being victimized everyday by those who would rather overdo it, due to limited understanding. ‘I am’ explores the love angle a man shares with another man, and gives you life as it is – not how you want to view it. Social activists are bound to throng the theaters and vocal advocates that support gender equality and the controversial gay rights are sure to take this one to the Oscars. The movie brings together a myriad of talents and environmental issues .
