Delhi 6: Bollywood Music and Movie Review
Delhi 6 was one of the most awaited Bollywood movies of 2009. Coming from the makers of Rang De Basanti, nothing less than a masterpiece was expected out of writer/director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. Released on Feb 20 2009, it was produced by Ronnie Screwvala. Delhi 6 boasts of a huge and varied cast ranging from Abhishek Bachhan and Sonam Kapoor to Rishi Kapoor, Vijay Raaz, Waheeda Rehman, Raghubir Yadav, Supriya Pathak Shah, Pavan Malhotra, Divya Dutta, Atul Kulkarni, Deepak Dobriyal and Tanvi Azmi
The movie revolves around Roshan (Abhishek Bachhan), who is a half Hindu-half Muslim NRI. He is on a visit to India for the first time after insistence from his Grandmother (Waheeda Rehman), who wishes to spend her last days in Delhi. It is there that he falls for Bittu (Sonam Kapoor), who aspires of becoming the next Indian Idol. This romantic plot is surrounded by parallel subplots like the famous monkeyman fiasco, visits to the Taj Mahal, cows delivering on the roads and the Hindu-Muslim tension leading to violence.
Delhi 6 is the directors attempt at introducing us to old Delhi, which has a unique culture of its own. This part of Delhi with pin code 110006 is fondly called Delhi 6. An extravagant set depicting Chandni Chowk was erected in Sambhar (Rajasthan). The music of Delhi 6 is a rage thnks to the musical genuis of Oscar Winner ‘AR Rehman’ and the lyrics are written by Prasoon Joshi. Cameraman Binod Pradhan does a good job at capturing the pulse of the city. Amitabh Bachhan’s special appearance is the cherry on the cake.
The movie grossed over 27 crores in the first 3 days, which is the highest for a solo Abhishek Bachhan starrer and the collections are still going strong. All in all, Delhi 6 can make sure you go back home smiling, if you go for the first show.
