Dev D: Should not flatter to deceive

Dev D, a movie that stars Abhay Deol, is a romantic drama directed by Anurag Kashyap, who is known across the world for ‘Black Friday’. The producer of the movie is Ronnie Screwvala. It is going to be released under the banner of UTV Spot Boy and the movie from the drama genre is set to be released on February 6, 2009.
Dev D essays the journey of a contemporary Dev Das, (remember the famous Sarat Chandra Novel), played by Abhay Deol, who hits drugs and depression. Dev gets further into the abyss of narcotics and alcohol after losing out on her Paro (Kalki Koechlin). This should not be confused with some village damsel. Her Paro is a stunner. Next, he partially gets revived from an escort by profession reminding of Chandramukhi, played by Mahi Gill. The story is a study into the multifaceted psyche of a human being.

Dev D is Anurag Kashyap’ desperate attempt to hog the limelight again, especially after his pseudo-arty venture called No Smoking bombed at the box office. It has Abhay Deol in the lead and is being considered a continuation of his good work of late similar to the ones in ‘Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local’ and ‘Oye Lucky Oye’. Shilpa Rao, Toshi, Joi Barua and Supriya give vocal rendition for Amit Trivedi’s fabulous music.
Dev D should do good business as and when it comes because Ghazni and Rab Ne…would by then be faded owing to a lingered presence.
We would be waiting to see how Anurag’s walk down the intriguing lanes of psyche be recieved. We would also love to travel with him and hope he does not lose the plot on the quest of being too classy. Here is hoping that Dev D does not flatter to deceive.

Bad Luck Govind: The power of positivism amidst misfortunes
Varun khanna’s “Bad Luck Govind” has just been released across the nation (on January 10, 2009) and its providing a bit of comic warmth to the bomb-wary people. The movie stars Gaurav Kapoor, Parmeet Sethi, Hrishita Bhatt, Vrajesh Hirjee, Govind Namdeo and Zakir Hussain. The movie is being co-produced by the director along with Himanshu Shah, Chirag Arora and Tarun Arora. Mixed Blood Cinema and Artesian Media take over as production houses for the movie.
“Bad luck Govind” is about Govind. Govind is perhaps the most unlucky person walking on the planet. The movie travels with him from Delhi to Mumbai where his fate is being threaded to the fate of underworld dons, bookmakers and a charming nurse. It also traces his realization about the positive forces of earth that keeps the romance called life alive.
Direction of Varun Khanna, who made his debut in 2006 with ‘Beyond Honor’ as a writer and director, tends towards the display of extraordinary adventures of an ordinary man and he comes out well to establish such a vision in Bad luck Govind. Gaurav Kapur plays Govind and the Channel V vee-jay seems to have come of age with his portrayal of a helpless soul visibly playing at strange odds with himself.
It is too early to talk about the revenue that Bad luck Govind would generate or if it would access the international arena but presently, it needs to be really liked by the audience here in India to stand up to the genre of ‘Aamir’ and ‘King Khan’ starrers.
Overall, Bad luck Govind seems a nice effort to unravel the power of optimism and the need to stick to it amidst faithless chaos and continuous misfortune.

This year another Bollywood Blockbuster is coming alongside Christmas and New Year. Aamir Khan’s new film Ghajini is no less than an event, as the star has continued to maintain his standard of variety and versatility in this movie. The most looked-for and discussed movie of the year is out now in theaters and winning hearts across the globe. A.R. Murugadoss launches his directorial debut with confidence having a right blend of incisive script and screenplay.
Ghajini is in fact the Hindi version of the colossal hit Tamil film Ghajini. However, the remake has its climax different from the original one. Much hype has been created before its release. It has lived up to the expectation and already earned super hit status across the globe.
As Aamir always sway with a different genre in all of his projects, it is also followed in Ghajini, which is basically a revenge saga. Unlike traditional revenge based movies, this one presents a bundle of emotions and thrill. The movie depicts a unique tale of a person suffering from short-term Memory Loss. Sanjay (Aamir Khan) is resolute to avenge the merciless death of his girl friend Kalpana (Asin). The only hurdle in this is his stumbling memory loss after every fifteen minutes. The only thing sticks to his mind is the death of Kalpana and murderers name Ghajini (Pradeep Rawat). Things he uses to fight his amnesia are Polaroid Camera and his cell phone beeping every fifteen minutes.
Screenplay of Ghajini is excellent, as it follows two sequences, flashback and present life. The whole movie grips you in such a manner that you can’t even put your eyes off the screen for a moment. Aamir Khan is at the height of his performance in this fantabulous film, whereas debutante Asin supports him with her over the top performance in this spellbound flick. However, performance of Jiah Khan, who made her debut alongside Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd, is average.
Ghajini is a treat to watch and great fun for the universal audience. Go ahead and watch this head-spinning venture. You will surely nominate it, as a new dawn in Hindi Cinema.

Subhash Ghai along with his production house, Mukta Arts, have come up with yet another Bollywood venture, Yuvvraaj. The movie hit the theaters on November 21, 2008 and has been written, produced and directed by Shubash Ghai, one of the greatest Indian show makers of all-time having the credit of making Karz (1980), Hero (1983), Saudagar (1991), Karma (1986), Yaadein (2001), Taal (1999) and Pardes (1997). The music of the movie was released by T-Series Pvt Ltd.
Yuvvraaj stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif for the first time, since Partner (2007), where the latter played opposite to Govinda. The movie also co-stars Anil Kapoor, Zayed Khan, Boman Irani and Mithun Chakraborty. This movie is the story of Deven (played by Salman Khan) trying to become a billionaire and getting Anoushka (Katrina Kaif) and at the same time, giving life to his father’s dream of a united family.
Deven is a struggling singer. He signs an agreement with Dr. Banton (played by Boman Irani), his girl friend Anoushka’s father, to become a billionaire within 40 days. For acquiring this wealth, he goes on an emotional rollercoaster ride of joy and pain with both his brothers: Gyanesh Yuvraaj Singh (played by Anil Kapoor), who becomes the soul owner of the property after his father’s death, and Danny Yuvvraaj Singh (played by Zayed Khan).
Music of the movie is another magical creation from A. R. Rehman. ‘Meri Dost’ and ‘Shano Shano’ have already made an impact on the scene. Again, the direction of the movie will take you on a ride till you reach its end, which has been under severe criticism by most reviewers.
The movie had a good opening. But with the backup of a banner such as Mukta Arts along with Subhash’s Ghai’s storyline and A. R. Rehman’s stunning music and a star-studded cast, everyone will be expecting another 2008 blockbuster in the form of Yuvvraaj.
